Structural Retaining Stars Explained: Authenticity, Safety & Performance

Engineers: Insist on Authenticity. Check Markings. Never Rely on Imitations.

Structural retaining stars—common on historic masonry buildings—were originally engineered to provide critical reinforcement. But with age, many of these early stars, especially those made from low-grade cast iron, have become brittle and unreliable. Today, the market is flooded with decorative imitations that look the part but are not designed for load-bearing or structural use. These should never be installed where strength and safety are required.

Our Structural Star Building Retaining Washers are proudly Made in the USA and built to exceed performance expectations. Also known as Seismic Earthquake Washers or Century Star Washers, they feature historically accurate architecture and function as anchor plates or wall washers for exterior masonry applications. When paired with tie rods or bolts, these stars brace masonry walls, prevent lateral movement, and provide long-lasting structural stability. Available in both five- and six-point configurations, each star is produced in hot-galvanized cast ductile iron, with custom options available in aluminum or bronze.

Why Our Structural Stars Stand Apart
Manufactured from Ductile Iron, ASTM 65-45-12, our stars deliver near “semi-steel” strength and superior weldability. Unlike standard cast iron—which can crack, fail, or break under stress—our stars are engineered specifically for demanding structural roles and are hot-galvanized for unmatched durability in the field.

You may also see these stars referenced as Gib Plates, Hurricane Bolts, Pattress Plates, Masonry Restraints, or Tie Backs in architectural and engineering plans. We also supply all required complementary hardware—rods, nuts, washers, plates, turnbuckles—to ensure a complete, reliable installation.

Quick Specs:

  • Most sizes feature a flat back with a 7/8″ ID.
  • Recommended hot-galvanized accessories: 3/4 Ogee Washer, 3/4 USS Flat Washer, 3/4-10 Heavy Hex Nut, and 3/4-10 × 6′ Threaded Rod.
  • Our 13″ stars use 1″ hardware and measure 2-1/2″ thick.
  • All other sizes feature a standard 7/8″ thickness.
  • Popular sizes include our 7-1/2″ (5-point), with additional models ranging from 5-1/2″ up to 13″.

Bottom Line: Not all stars are built for structural reinforcement. Know the difference. Choose trusted, proven products.

Engineers: Verify the markings. Select only genuine structural stars. Accept nothing less.
